Back Pain

Back pain is a growing epidemic for Canadians. In fact it’s the most common physical complaint that leads to lost time from work.

Back pain includes low back pain, middle back pain, and upper back pain. Nerve and muscular problems, degenerative disc disease, and arthritis can all result in back pain.

What Are the Causes of Back Pain?

  • Spinal Stenosis

Spinal Stenosis is usually a degenerative condition in which the canal housing the spinal cord and nerves in the lower back begins to narrow.  This narrowing causes significant back pain as well as neurological symptoms in the extremities.

  • Back Injuries

Back problems and injuries often occur during recreational activities, sports, work, or projects at home.

  • Spinal Degeneration

Spinal Degeneration occurs with the aging process.  As we age, our discs dry out  causing increased stress to the spinal joints resulting in pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility; too much stress on the spine over a period of time can precipitate this process.  Maintaining a healthy spine with regular Chiropractic care, a healthy diet, and exercise regimen can help slow down this degenerative process.

  • Spine Curvature Disorders

The normal curves of the spine are designed to withstand loads placed on the body; any abnormality causing undue stress on the spine can result in pain. Exaggerations in the lordotic curves (neck and low back), or kyphotic curves (mid back) are commonly postural in nature.  An "S"-shaped curvature of the spine (scoliosis) may have several causes and should always be addressed.

  • Spinal Disc Problems

Disc degeneration or disc herniations play a part in back pain.

  • Spondylolisthesis

Spondylolisthesis is a defect or fracture of one or both wing-shaped parts of a vertebra; this defect can result in vertebrae slipping backward, forward, or over the bone below, and may cause low back pain.  This defect can be detected on X-ray examination.
